It is pertinent to understand the journey of furniture to get a grasp of the evolution of edgebands. The earliest furniture comprised of simple and solid wood logs or stone cut or chiselled to serve as sitting option by the pre-historic men.
Evolution of Tables
The concept of a piece of furniture to be used as a table for keeping items like games etc was developed by the early Egyptians. It was the Chinese who first came up with an idea to use a table for writing and art creation purposes. Versatility in contributing communities has also been reflected in the name ‘table’ that itself has emanated from three different languages viz. Latin, Old English and Old French, and what is interesting is the meaning in each of these languages for the word related to the table. In each language, the meaning of the word table is “a piece of furniture with the flat overspread and legs”

The tables were primarily used, just for the convenience of keeping things above the floor level that eventually went ahead to take its place in small offices where the solid wood tables are used. After the age of renaissance, the table again got updated to draw maps and charts. The modern desk evolved post-industrialization era when the workforce in every organization started ti increase manifolds. These desks were made of solid wood, and soon the demand for light-weight and sleek furniture emanated from the customers. In the words of Jean-Baptiste Say “Demand creates its own supply” and the same is true in the case of tables as our friend John K. Mayo came up with the first patent for plywood in December 1865. However, the poor man died poor without capitalizing his numero uno. Later on, in 1905 Gustav Carlson created laminated wood panels that were complemented by the fully waterproof adhesive made by Dr. James Nevin and the rest is history.
Today almost every designer understands that he must keep a space reserved, only for edgebands, in his designs as the said design’s elegance would not meet its apt justice unless it is fitted with a suitable edgeband. A piece of furniture may serve its purpose well based on its design, but the answer to the question “For how long?” depends on the presence or absence of edgeband. In short, furniture may seem to breathe but the health of its lungs depends on the edgeband.
